EratosthenesWhy Geographia?

γεωγραφία : Geography
To describe or write about the Earth.

The word geography was first used by Eratosthenes, born c.267 BC in Cyrene. Credited as the father of Geography, Eratosthenes was a Greek mathematician, astronomer, poet, musician, and the first Geographer! He died in Alexandria c.194 BC.

PtolemyGeographia is used in recognition of the scientific treatise of Claudius Ptolemy (c.100 – c.170 AD), a geographer, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, and astrologer. Ptolemy wrote a number of scientific treaties – “Almagest” (The Mathematical Treatise – on the apparent motions of the stars and planetary paths), “Geographia” (The Geography – a gazetteer, atlas, and treatise on cartography), and “Tetrábiblos” (The Four Books – on the philosophy and practice of astrology).

Geographia, written c.150 AD, was a compendium of all geographic knowledge of the Greco-Roman world.

Logo

The Geographia Logo was designed by Andrew Aldridge and features a terrestrial globe (Earth), with a cut-away revealing a simplified three-layer interior (Core, Mantle, Crust). The globe’s stationary mount is a standard Half-Meridian, with a ‘floating’ (dashed) Full-Meridian holding the Moon in it’s orbit.

A nod to a former Geographia…

Geographia Ltd. was a prolific London-based publisher of globes, maps and atlases from the early 1900s to the late 1980s. Thereafter, it was eventually absorbed into Collins Bartholomew, the cartographic division of HarperCollins.

Geographia Ltd. was founded by Alexander Gross (1879-1958), a Hungarian immigrant. The company produced street maps and atlases of all the major cities in the United Kingdom, the most popular of which was the Greater London Street Atlas. Its New York office produced street guides for American cities in the mid 20th century. Geographia globe production ranged from 1910 to 1987.
